Evaluation Question Four- Use Of Technology

Digital Technology

I used a variety of different digital technology forms within this project in order to achieve a successful final product. I presented my work on a wix website. This is something that I have never used before. I also used a blog to present planning and evaluation work. By using both I was able to learn new skills on the wix website and continue to improve on what I knew on blogger. I found that I enjoyed using wix, however I did more of my pre production and evidence of planning on blogger. This is because of the experience I had on with using it and all the accessories that come with it.

In order to reach our target audience in as many different aspects through digital technology, we created a Facebook and Twitter. Both of theses being social networking sites we knew that we would be able to reach the people that we would think listen to the genre of music that we were representing. We also had a YouTube channel where people could find links to it from either our Facebook or Twitter. By going on our YouTube page people could see any previews of footage that we might have filmed and by having video’s on this site it meant we could then put it on our blogs or share on the social networking sites. This is where we got some of our feedback from, by sharing the video from YouTube on to Facebook. The other advantage of sharing a video means that people can share the music video on themselves for other people to watch and give us feedback on.

On blogger I could display video’s as posts through getting the embedded code from YouTube and I could also display power points by using either slide share or author stream. On blogger there are different accessories that help you display different pieces of work. We found gikr.com after looking at a blog from the previous years. It is a way of showing multiple images without separating them all on one page (revolving images). It makes any ideas to the viewer easier to see. Voki is another accessory that shows our target audience in a clearer way to the viewer; however it also helped us develop our work. By creating voki from any questionnaires and target audience feedback we received, we were able to create a good idea of who we thought are target audience was. By having a clear understanding of this it means that when it comes to any decisions in the pre-production and construction stages we were able to relate back to our voki’s and think is this something that would appeal to them. It was not only a great way of displaying ideas but it helped the development of our project.

Overall if it weren’t for the development of technology some of theses process that we went through would not have been possible. Without technology our project wouldn’t have been where it is today.

Evaluation Question Four- Use Of Technology

Below are some slides describing the what technology I used and the way I used it in the, construction and research, and the, planning and evaluation stages of this project.

Evaluation Question Three- Audience Feedback

Overall receiving the audience feedback that we did, helped us improve on our project dramatically, one of the best ways to show this is if you watch the video from our initial screening and compare it to our final edit. The difference is dramatic because of the improvement which we wouldn't have been able to make if it wasn't for the audience feedback that we got.

Evaluation Question Three- Audience Feedback

We gained audience feedback from many different outlets. One of these was Facebook. By putting our work on a social networking site it means that more than likely because of our friends being our age we got feedback from our target audience.

Another way of gaining feedback was through our initial screening.

All theses ways of gaining feedback helped improve our project, however one way that we gained very detailed information was to do a one on one interview with a person within our target audience. By asking her specific questions we were able to get answers on how we were doing in our project at the time. Below is the video I created to show the feedback.

We also received some comments on out YouTube channel by the general public.

Evaluation Question Three- Audience Feedback

"What have you learned from your audience feedback"

When answering this question it is important to consider all aspects of feedback we have received through different outlets. It is also important to mention that audience feedback is one thing that may have influenced our work in the most important ways. Although we consider conventions of the genre and we think about what our audience might like. When we receive feedback about our work from our target audience it means they are able to give us constructive opinions on the different aspect of our work which we can improve on. Without this feedback we wouldn't be able to make the amount of progression that we have made.

Below are some recordings of my opinion of how the feedback from the initial screening helped us improve on our ancillary task and main product.

The www feedback above showed us that our target audience responded well to quick editing techniques during some of the scenes in the music video. It showed us that if we wanted to add more like it in the future, this would be possible. We later took this further and used quick editing techniques during the narrative scenes.

With the reassurance from some of the feedback forms like this one on the left saying there is a 'clear colour scheme, fits with the album', this showed us that the combination of our music video and ancillary task had a clear connection which is what we were trying to achieve. Feedback like this helps us recognise that we are making the right decisions and to continue on the path we are on.

Evaluation Question Two- Combination Of Ancillary And Main Product

Below are some slides analysing an existing artist combination of magazine advert, digi pack and music video. I am going to analyse there work and compare it to the decisions we made in a group in order to keep the connection visible of how the ancillary tasks we did fits with our main product.

Evaluation Question Two- Combination Of Ancillary And Main Product (Inspiration)

The second evaluation question is, 'How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task'. When beginning to answer this question I want to go back to the start of this project and what we had researched that later on influenced the decisions we made. After seeing this You Tube video below we gathered great inspiration from this stop frame animation. We also began to research into our audience and the genre, we decided that we wanted our character to be fun loving because of the audience we were trying to connect with. We wanted to portray the performers personality in both the music video and in the ancillary task.

After thinking along these lines we thought, how would we connect our ancillary tasks in a way that they match both the video and the personality we are trying to portray, at the same time appealing to our audience within the genre. This is when we had to bring in our own experiences of what we might like because we are the likely target audience of our music video. I thought of the layout and how we could make it feminine and fun at the same time.

This is when what we had seen previously in our research would then help us to decide on a style that would fit our ancillary task and our music video together. We liked the idea of how the video below looked like a scarp book and then we decided to look at laying out the digi pack in this way. This would mean that it looked feminine (girly), it wouldn't be serious and it would hopefully reflect the personality of artist we were advertising.

We tried to incorporate this idea of scrap book in the music video when we filmed on the green screen and then added a crumpled lined paper background. However after looking back at the footage and seeing that it wasn't always in focus we then had the decision to re-film. We decided then that we didn't feel like it fitted with the genre and it would be better to re-film the performance shots in the studio. Although this din't work for us I feel like it was a good learning step for us. It made us think about our genre more and we decided that we needed to consider it more when we went on shoots.

We managed to learn a lot from experimenting with the green screen and we realised we didn't need to change the background in order to connect the video to the theme of our ancillary tasks. We decided that we would do a shoot were the performer was wearing the same outfit in the music video. This connected the three together and we were then able to work on a solid foundation of then continuing the fun loving theme.

Evaluation Question One- Use Of Conventions

Within the country pop genre and a lot of music video's today the performer can often be seen singing whilst in the narrative of the music video. An example of this is in the Miley Cyrus 'Party In The USA' music video below. This has also been done in Taylor Swift's '22'. It is there to make it exciting for the viewer. Although within our music video we haven't done this throughout, we do have a classroom scene were we have decided to follow this iconography of our genre. The same sequence of shot types have been used in both '22' and our music video.

Evaluation Question One- Use Of Conventions (Editng)

In theses images you can see a number of different shots within Taylor's music video '22'. These are shots that show a scene in which there have been quick edits made to make it fast paced to match the conventions of the genre. We have done this in out narrative scenes like in the existing music video, it has been cut on the beat.

Evaluation Question One- Use Of Conevntions (Props)

In Taylor Swift's music video '22' we can also see her using different props within the one scene, the 'studio' setting (white background). We have also done this when any props that fit the conventions of the genre have been used. The props are used to show the performers personality which is usually fun loving when looking at a country pop song; this is because of the young audience. We have also decided to use the same kind of scene and shot types when showcasing any props within a performance that would show the performers personality. This is another example where we have made our video fit the conventions of our genre in some ways.

Evaluation Question One- Use Of Conventions

When comparing our music video to Taylor Swift's '22' you can see where we have used the conventions within the genre of country pop in our music video through the similarities we have. This is because of the choices we made to fit the genre. Below you can see that although Taylor Swift isn't in the traditional studio for her performance shots we can see they are similar to the shots we have. This is because sequences of close, mid and long shots have been used. A majority of them have been close ups and mid shots so you can reflect the emotions of the performer clearly so the viewers can see this. We have done this for the same purpose. This is a generic convention of most music video's but is especially noticeable in county pop music and in particular Taylor Swift's music video's.

Evaluation Question One- Use Of Conventions

In our music video we have followed some of the conventions within the genre we chose. This is so that our audience would be able to relate to the music video. Compared to the music video 'Trouble' by Taylor Swift we decided to take on a traditional representation of men like she did in her music video. The men are traditionally the seen as the sex to cheat and especially when the song is sung by a woman. Although in our music video we don't see the boyfriend cheating, you can see that he doesn't treat the singer right. You can also see this in Taylor Swift's music video.

When looking at the shot types we can notice there are similar shot types because the same mid shots and close-ups are used in her performance so that we can see her emotions clearly. In this existing music video we can also see that she has a considerably long intoduction. In our music video we also decided to do this so that we could have time set the scene before the performing started and we could show the narrative; like it has been done in Taylor's music video.

There are also scene's in the editing of 'Trouble' were the cuts and changes between scenes are quick. This has been done to match the pace of the music. We have also done this in order to keep our audience interested and to fit the conventions of a the country pop genre. There are scenes within our narrative were the cuts have purposely been made to be shorter to make it seem as if the fights happen quite a lot without making it repetitive for the viewer.

Evaluation Question One- Development Of Conventions

Below is a slide comparing the Mise en Scene analysed in the previous post about Taylor Swift music video, 'you belong with me'. Compared with how the conventions differ in my music video. These slides will show how we developed the conventions of our genre within our music video.

Evaluation Question One- Development Of Conventions

Below are some slides of a country pop song by Taylor Swift. I have analysed the Mise en Scene of this music video to look at the conventions within my genre. I hope to compare these convention with my music video to show how I developed the conventions of this genre in my project in the next post.

Opening Narrative Footage

This is some of the footage from the narrative scene we filmed today.

Plan For Filming

One of the main things that came up in the feedback that we got from the class was that they wanted to see more narrative. So today we are going to film the opening narrative scene here..

Feedback- Initial Screening Music Video

In this video you can see in the writing the written feedback we received from our class mates and teachers and their verbal feedback they also gave us. \By having this it means that we could have a fresh outlook on how the music video was looking and they would be able to give their opinions on how to make it better. This helped us greatly in all three aspect of our project and has meant that we can move forward with the project in completing our goals.

Feedback- Digi Pack and Magazine Advert

Our classmates and teacher took part in giving us both written and verbal feedback about the changes we could make to all three aspects of this project. They told us watch changes could ensure that the digi pack and poster would be right for genre and to appeal to our audience.

Development In Our Project

There have been times in this project where we have needed to re think the project in order to make it easier. We decided that after looking at our project and our sequence on Premier Pro that it was getting too complicated. We decided that in order to make it easier for us as a group that it needed to change. Because there are two of us in a group, we might be working on different sections of the footage and we need to be able to understand what’s changed without asking the other person. We also both needed to have a layout that we could understand.

This is the old lay out where clips had been dragged to different lines on the sequence. However now that we have changed it we have labelled each line to what clips should be added into it. This way all the clips from a certain scene will be on the same line. This makes it easier if we wanted to use that footage later on in the music video; all we would have to do is drag it out rather than having to add another line in and needing to sync up that clip.
